Cyber Criminals Aren’t Just Nigerian Princes

If you are one of the thousands of people in San Antonio who has received an email from a “Nigerian Prince” who needed you to send them money for something, then you were almost the victim of a cyber crime. The Nigerian Prince scam is one of the more famous examples of cyber crime in the new millennium.

Being accused of a cyber crime can be extremely serious. There are a few main types of cyber crime one should be aware of.

Identity theft is the acquisition and use of someone else’s social security number and their credit card information. Internet fraud is a cyber crime that is linked to to identity theft. It involves using the internet to take advantage of someone else, either through email scams or through hacking into someone’s home computer or the system of a private business.

The most serious cyber crime is the downloading of child pornography. In Texas, it is illegal to promote or exploit children under 18 and the penalties carry a sentence of up to 99 years and a fine of up to $10,000. Intentional possession of child pornography is a third degree felony. Possession of more than 6 images on your computer is classified as intent to distribute.

People tend to commit cyber crimes because they believe their identities are hidden, but that is not the case. It is imperative that you find a good criminal defense attorney familiar with the technical side of cyber crime offenses to best navigate the system successfully.
